C17 – Children’s Cancer & Blood Disorders (National Research Group)
Childhood cancer is unique. It is not just a smaller part of the adult world of cancer. The biology, treatment and effects of treatment are often unique to children. For this reason, childhood cancer needs to be studied, researched and treated as its own discipline.

- At any given time more than 350 children are in active treatment and as many as 1500 are being followed as out-patients on a long term basis
- 250,000 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed each year

developed country - 70% survive with proper diagnosis and treatment
- 80% of children with cancer live in developing countries and do not have access to adequate diagnosis and treatment
- Parents become full time carers when dealing with prolonged life-
threatening illness of a child – they need their employment and
income protected - Long-term effects can, for example, affect education, ability to get
work and insurance – these children and young people deserve
rehabilitation without discrimination
